NEW DELHI, May 30: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken up a probe into the assault of Martin Massey, to file an investigation report on the case by July 11. Massey was beaten up by the police for allegedly straying into the Prime Minister’s (PM) route.
A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Mahinder Narain and Justice S K Mahajan also asked the Centre to compensate Massey for the “pains and agony” suffered by him and to provide him with free medical treatment.
The CBI took over the probe into the case from the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Wednesday after a recommendation from the union home ministry to this effect, the bench was informed by Additional Solicitor General A M Singhvi.
Singhvi said Joint Secretary (Home), P K Jalali, had written a letter to CBI Director Joginder Singh on May 28, asking him to take over investigations.
Singhvi, had earlier told the court that Massey was not beaten by the police and that he had fallen from his scooter as he was drunk.
He said a woman witness testified before the police that she saw Massey falling down from his scooter and the police helping him to stand up.
When the court asked Singhvi whether he himself could believe such a story, Singhvi had no answer.
