HC orders status quo on GU Court member

AHMEDABAD, Nov 16: The Gujarat High Court has directed the Gujarat University to maintain status quo with regard to the position of one Darshansingh Sikh who is currently a member of the University Court.

Justice M R Calla passed this order while accepting Sikh’s petition on Monday. In his petition, Sikh had expressed apprehensions that he would be removed as a member of the G U Court, under provision of the Gujarat University Act. According to the petition, Section 16 of the Act empowers the Chancellor to nominate member of the Court from different categories, including four from the category of Deans. Darshan was nominated by the Chancellor but apprehended that after the new Court has come into existence after the polls, he would be removed even though he (Sikh) had not completed three years’ term.
