In an interim order, a sessions court has restrained the city police from arresting Hemendra Mehta, BJP MLA from suburban Borivli, in a case of suicide by a youth in which he is apprehending arrest.Hearing an anticipatory bail petition filed by Mehta, judge P.S. Paranjpe yesterday ordered the police not to arrest Mehta until April 21 when the court would decide his plea. The youth, Dharmesh Jariwala, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his residence in Malad on April 10. He had left behind a note allegedly implicating Mehta and some other persons for abetting his suicide. Mehta has pleaded in the petition that his name was unnecessarily being dragged to malign his image and denied abetting suicide of the youth. His lawyer Niteen Pradhan urged for Mehta’s anticipatory bail and said in the event of court granting him liberty he would cooperate with the investigations. Prosecutor R.V. Kini, however, argued that the matter was quite serious and police had to find out Mehta’s complicity in the suicide. The court deferred the matter till April 21 for final arguments.
