HYDERABAD, May 24: In a significant move, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, on Friday, sought an explanation from the state police on the action taken to protect the lives of four prominent leaders of the State Civil Liberties Committee.

A division bench treated a telegram sent by the secretary of Peoples Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Sudha Ramalingam, as a public interest petition. The petitioner has alleged that there was a threat to the lives of civil rights leaders, K G Kannabiran, K Bala Gopal, Hara Gopal and Vara Vara Rao.

The division bench,

comprising Chief Justice P S Mishra and Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, issued notices to the home secretary and the director general of police (DGP) on allegations levelled against police and an underground outfit “green tigers”.

The PUCL secretary, in her telegram, alleged that the civil rights leaders were facing a threat to their lives from the green tigers. She felt that the police were either not responding to the situation or were turning a blind eye to the situation. She also suspected an “unholy” understanding between the green tigers and the state police to eliminate the leaders.
