Surat, April 30: The health and family welfare department of the district administration will observe Jeevan Raksha Saptaah from May 1, the foundation day of the state. The week-long series of programmes will concentrate on health of women and children.

As part of the programmes, a Jeevan Rakshak Yatra — which has been divided into four parts — will begin from the city on Friday and cover the entire district during the week. The first batch of marchers will cover selected villages of the Choryasi, Olpad, Palsana and Mahuva talukas of the district, while the second batch will cover villages of Kamrej, Mangrol and Mandvi. While the third batch of marchers will pass through selected villages of Bardoli, Valod and Vyara talukas of the district, the fourth batch will pass through Songadh, Uchhal and Nizar talukas before converging again at the district headquarters of the city on May 7.

A statement issued by the district health and family welfare office said that the yatra was part of the state-wide effort in contributing towards 1998, which has been declared the `World Health Year’. He said that the yatra will focus primarily on the need to have good health for women and children, especially the girl child. Efforts would also be made to realise a slogan `Health For All by 2000 AD’, given by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Teams of doctors, paramedics and health workers of the district administration will move along with the yatra, where people will be taught of the ways of safe motherhood, the need of good health and nutrition to children and ways of combatting diseases.
