GAZA, July 7: Tension heightened further in the West Bank town of Hebron following recovery of defaced pages of a holy book in a school. The headmistress of the girls’ school informed the Palestinian authority yesterday morning that she found “ripped and trampled” copies of the book lying on the ground.

The incident aggravated the already tense situation in the area following the arrest of an Israeli woman last week for reportedly plastering posters on the walls of Arab shops in Hebron insulting religious feelings of a community.

The head of the Hebron municipality, Mustafa al-Natsheh blamed the Israeli settlers for the provocative act. Dr Saeb Eraikat, Palestinian Minister for local self-rule said the action demonstrated that the Israeli government wanted to annul the peace pact with the Palestinians and wanted to pursue the Jewish settlement drive in Arab land.
