CHANDIGARH, Nov 25: The anti-encroachment drive in sector 7-C was carried out peacefully by the enforcement staff of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, here today. The drive is a part of the road-recarpetting programme of the Corporation.Hedges, angle-irons and other encroachements were removed from the road-berms of the nearly 80 houses in the sector. A JCB was pressed into service. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner S.M. Sharma.Meanwhile, former senior deputy mayor Prem sagar Jain has alleged that the "drive started by the officials of the MC in different parts of the City is directionless, aimless and without prior approval of the House"."I fail to understand what connection this anti-encroachment drive has got with the carpetting of roads," he added.However, a senior MC official, when contacted, said: "We're carrying out a lawful activity as per the Act and the resolution passed by the House."The MC now plans to remove the encroachments from Sector 8-B on Monday.
