NEW DELHI, February 18: The Delhi High Court has stayed all illegal construction around the Jama Masjid and has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to submit photographs of unauthorised structures existing around the complex.

The division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Devinder Gupta and Justice K.S. Gupta, also directed DDA to take the help of the Delhi Police when necessary. The DDA says that new unauthorised constructions have been coming up around the mosque and had sought the help of the police to stop them.

The PIL was filed by the Indian National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage and Conservation Society of Delhi seeking directions to the Union and Delhi governments to “preserve the monument and stop unauthorised constructions around the complex”.

Directions were also sought to be issued to the Sunni Majlis Board and the Jama Masjid Trust to stop the use of any illegal building raised in the area. Notices were issued to all the 13 respondents, including the Union and Delhi governments, Delhi Police, DDA, MCD, department of cluture in the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, Archaeological Survey of India. The case has been posted for further hearing on April 29.
