CALCUTTA, MAR 4: Tensions ran high in Bandar area of Khanakul in Hooghly district today following yesterday’s violence and subsequent police firing and lathi-charge that left one person dead and several injured.

Official sources said jawans of the Eastern Frontier Rifles had been deployed in the area and the situation was under control.

The sources said a teenaged boy was killed when police opened fire to ward off an attack on them by the activists of the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Trinamool Congress and BJP workers were protesting against the alleged rape of a tribal woman by a policeman. Trinamool Congress leaders, however, alleged that three people were killed in the police firing.

The sources said altogether 36 people, including 14 police personnel, were injured during the clash between the mob and police.

The trouble started when villagers of the area locked up a police camp in protest against police atrocities on women.

A strong contingent of police, led by the sub-divisional police officer who arrived on the spot, said they were subjected to heavy brickbatting by angry villagers. The mob kidnapped a policeman and set fire to a police jeep. The sub-divisional police officer was injured in the brickbatting.
