GORAKHPUR, May 1: The death toll in the worst hooch tragedy in Uttar Pradesh in recent memory has mounted to 60 with many victims still critical in the government hospital and at Sewrahi town, around 100 kms from here, where the deadly brew was allegedly manufactured.

Though the official figure in the tragedy is 32, local authorities do not rule out the toll crossing 60 as patients continue to trickle in with complaints of reducing eyesight and stomach ache. A team of medical doctors is camping in the town. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident while the SHO of Sewrahi and four other local policemen have been suspended for turning a blind eye to sale of illicit liqiur in the area.

The victims’ nightmare began on April 28 when they consumed the killer brew sold much below the price of a country-made liquor pouch. Then started complaints of reducing eyesight, dizziness and other disorders on the same night. The victims could not get proper treatment because the only primary health centrein the town had no proper medicine.
