The roof of a three-storey hostel in Tichakpura village of Vyara taluka caved in on Friday, trapping about 150 children inside the debris.The Tichakpura sarpanch told the police that at 7 pm, the terrace of Adarsh Niwasi Shala collapsed. Within minutes, the subsequent two floors also caved in. On hearing about the incident, the Vyara police team and Surat SP Brajesh Kumar Jha rushed to the site for rescue operations.According to reports, the rescue team has brought out 18 children — 14 alive and four dead. There is a possibility of more children having lost their lives in the incident. Those who sustained injuries were admitted to the Vyara Referral Hospital.“We are waiting for more aid and cranes from the Surat Fire Department. There are close to 150 students and 14 school staffers inside,” said Vyara sub-inspector KI Modi.
