Security forces on Friday recovered a huge cache of arms from the jungles in Orissa’s Ganjam district, exactly a week after hundreds of armed Naxalites stormed an armoury in Nayagarh and fled with a large number of weapons. The origins of the weapons recovered by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were still being verified, but it is believed that many of them could have come from Nayagarh, officials here said.

The arms were recovered during a search operation carried out by CRPF’s 138 and 41 battalions under the command of the 127 battalion, an official spokesperson said. The total number of weapons recovered stands at 323, including two sub-machine guns, 16 INSAS rifles, several hundred rifles of other makes, six sten guns, 16 improvised explosive devices and six grenades. The cache was discovered in the Gasna forest area of Ganjam district, where combing operations have been on since the Nayagarh attack.
