Potter makes his way to Afghanistan

KABUL: About 50 lucky foreigners working in Afghanistan got their hands on a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on its release date on Saturday, beating many of their friends back home who live near more conventional bookstores. “I sent several text messages to friends and none of them had it yet…” said Jayne Cravens (41), of Henderson, Kentucky, a UN worker.

John Connolly, an executive with Paxton International, a logistics and moving company, bought 50 copies of the book in Dubai at the exact time of its release in London. He then boarded a plane to Kabul a couple of hours later with the books on board.

Book to set new postal record

NEW YORK: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, released on Saturday, was expected set a new record for delivering copies of the same book on a single day. The United Nations Universal Postal Union has estimated that more than 2.4 million copies of the book will be distributed in the United States, Canada and UK.

Bomb spoils Potter launch in Karachi

KARACHI: Pakistani police defused a car bomb outside a shopping mall in Karachi overnight, forcing a bookshop to cancel a live telecast from London of the launch of the book. Two boxes containing between 10 and 12 kg of RDX explosives were found inside a stolen Suzuki car.
