HYDERABAD, December 30: The five-day Indian Science Congress beginning here at Osmania University campus on January 3 will dwell at length on a number of subjects including bio-technology, genetics, environment and drugs in its 24 plenary sessions.

Several renowned national and international scientists, including Nobel laureate Ronald Hoffman, is expected to participate in the Congress.Prime Minister I K Gujral will inaugurate the conference, which will be attended by around 5,000 scientists. The city is hosting the Congress after a gap of 19 years.

Chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and general president of the 85th Indian Science Congress, P Rama Rao, told mediapersons that the Congress would take stock of the successes and failures in the field of science and technology, besides setting the tone for the future needs of the country. The theme of the Congress would be `Science and Technology in Independent India – Retrospect and Prospect’.

Rama Rao said a unique approach would be introduced in presenting papers in the sessions. The scientists, instead of reading prepared texts, would deliver lectures with the help of posters, which would help the young scientists interact easily with the seniors.

R C Greenwood (chancellor, University of California), C K N Patel (vice chancellor, University of California), Morris Rossen (advisor to International Atomic Energy) and Bhakta B Rath (associate director of Naval Research Laboratory (USA)) are among the prominent foreign scientists attending the Congress.

R Chidambaram, chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, A V Gokak, chairman of Telecom Commission, M S Swaminathan, K Kasturirangan, Mashelkar, director general of CSIR and G Padmanabhan of IISc, Bangalore will lead the Indian team.
