After meeting AICC president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, Chief Minister JD Rymbai on Tuesday said, “Probably, I am not the right person for the not-so-easy top job of CM.”

Rymbai said that in June, last year when Lapang was dislodged, he had nominated Rymbai for the CM’s post. Hence, Rymbai was not elected by the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

Speaking to reporters after his return, Rymbai said that since he was not an elected CLP leader, the leadership crisis prevailed during the last six months. He said that the CLP would decide his fate on January 17.

Rymbai said he has tried to give his best as the State CM, but candidly admitted that it was not an “easy task.” He said the current leadership squabble is not a “fight between Lapang and Rymbai”, as any of the 29 Congress legislators can aspire to be CM.

Brushing aside reports of division within the party, Rymbai said the present crisis emanated from a “division of opinion,” which would be sorted out after the CLP election.
