NEW DELHI, January 8: Shobha Kaul, wife of late Dr Sunil Kaul of Personal Point who was bludgeoned to death in 1996 alongwith two of his employees, today deposed before the court of Additional Sessions Judge N.K. Gupta. Her statement was recorded incomplete and was therefore deferred.

Shobha Kaul denied any acquaintance with the main accused, Subhash Gupta, a former MCD contractor. “I did not know him personally. I heard of his name after my husband’s body was found murdered,” she said. It was later that she came to know about Subhash Gupta being the member of their clinic situated at R-304, Greater Kailash Part-I, she added.

Reconstructing the events that took place on June 6, 1996, Kaul told the court that she had received calls from the fathers of the other two murder victims, Deepa Gupta and Sujata Shah. Both informed her that the two girls had reportedly accompanied Dr Kaul to some meeting, she said.

After receiving the two calls, Shobha Kaul went to the Personal Point office where, she said that “the guard told me some Mrs Gupta had telephoned twice to enquire about me”.

The third call from Gupta’s wife informed Shobha Kaul about the recovery of her husband’s licence from Subhash Gupta’s office. Surprised at the recovery, Shobha Kaul went to Gupta’s residence and informed his wife about the two girls who had accompanied her husband.

“When I told Mrs Gupta that two girls had accompanied Dr Kaul and Subhash Gupta, she asked me not to disclose it to other family members,” said Shobha Kaul in her statement. Gupta’s wife apparently accused Dr Kaul of abducting Subhash Gupta and therefore refused to accompany her to the police station.

Shobha Kaul, however, called Deepa Gupta’s father and reached the Chittaranjan Park police station to lodge a missing persons complaint. According to her, the police did not file the FIR and instead asked them to go to Okhla police station since the incident was reported from there. On reaching the Okhla police station, Shobha Kaul also found Subhash Gupta’s son filing an FIR.

While deposing to the court, Shobha Kaul said: “I had sent a message on my husband’s pager thrice but there was no response. Early next morning, I went to various hospitals and hotels to trace my husband and the two ladies.” It was only in the evening that she was informed about the recovery of her husband’s body, and that he alongwith the two girls had gone to meet Subhash Gupta at his office.
