Having worked for more than a decade for the silver screen, with the veterans of the showbiz, Rituparna Sengupta who rules Tollywood, showed, with her performance in Mai Meri Patni Aur Woh that this Bengali sensation has all that stuff to take over Bollywood too.

Rituparna is spontaneous when asked about her character in her latest released Anuranan (Resonance), a movie directed by Aniruddha Roy, that tries to venture into the relationships of a man and woman through the lives of two married couples. Talking about her character Nandita, she says that she is a kind of a person who is very encompassing in nature, a person who kept herself covered by layers of happiness and who does not have the rigidity of character in her life.

Answering to the query if she could relate herself to the character she says that she shares a lots of similarities with the character. “I am very much like my character in all her aspects. My character is as emotional as I am in my real life. My character too feels happy easily as I do in my real life,” elaborates Ritu.

Dwelling on the relationship of her role to the title of the movie she says that my character associated very much with the title, as there was very much the resonance between my character and her husband (Rahul Bose). We (as a couple in the movie) were very much in our lives establishing the resonance.

Talking about her understanding of the experimental cinema Rituparna shares her feeling in a rather candid way “Experimental cinema, which is in vogue these days, is always judged with a particular frame of mind. For me, personally speaking, experimental cinema can’t be too extreme.”

When asked how does she feel coming so far in the world of glamour and glitz, the Bengali glamour gives a very enthusiastic reply when she asserts, “As an actor I have come a long way. To be very frank I did not want to be an actor at any point of time. But, perhaps good cinema made me think, to be in this line”, she clarifies.

Dwelling on the challenges, she had to face in her career path she explains how hard she had worked to reach where she is at present, “I worked hard walking my way through the odds and evens”, as she adds how a fresher has to face slog to make way for the success, “I am not a conventional beauty, like in the real sense of the word. I don’t have those ‘black eyes’.

Telling about her favourite Bollywood movie she gives full marks to Rang De Basanti, but not without her valid reasons for the same, “I love this movie (Rang De Basanti), for its portrayal of love, faith and commitment with full vigour.”

When persuaded to share her take on the phenomenon of ‘live in relationships’, Ritu springs up with an immediate reply, “I don’t believe in live in relationships, because in such relationships, there is no commitment from either side.”

Rituparna was generous enough to share with me as to who are her role models from Bollywood, “I like Madhuri Dixit very much for her confidence and grace. Madhuri has been the pinnacle of success.” She also praises Amir Khan for his dedication to the movies and the characters, which he plays, she quips, adding, “I would love to work with Amir Khan and Shahrukh Khan”.

Finally, when asked what would Rituparna be if not in the glamour world, the lady passes a thoughtful smile, pauses and then says, “Though, today I am very passionate about acting, but if not in the showbiz, I would have been a teacher.”
