MUMBAI, NOV 6: The Income Tax department has served a notice on Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for his failure to file income tax returns for the assessment year 1999-2000.

“It is seen from the records of this office that you have not filed returns of income for assessment year 1999-2000. You are requested to file the return of income or produce proof if filed. Please also explain why penalty proceedings under section 271F should not be initiated in your case,” K K Kumaran, Income Tax Officer, said in his notice served on Deshmukh

Significantly, the notice has been served on Deshmukh in his individual capacity. It was posted to his Worli address on October 20. While the Chief Minister was not available for comment, his office said the notice has not been received so far.

However, the official admitted that there was some delay on Deshmukh’s part to file the return. However, the same has been filed along with the fine for delay, he said.

The notice sent by the Income Tax department assumes significant political importance since leader of opposition Narayan Rane had alleged that Deshmukh was not paying any income tax. The charge was subsequently denied by the Chief Minister.
