PATIALA, March 26: A fighter jet aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in the fields of Tolewal village, about 30 km from Sangrur, this afternoon. The pilot, however, ejected safely.

According to Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Anirudh Tiwari, the crash took place around 12.10 p.m. Sunam Sub-Divisional Magistrate Praneet Bhardwaj was among the first to reach the crash site around 12.30 p.m.

Tiwari said the plane fell in the wheat fields and broke into 35 to 40 pieces which got scattered in an area of about four km around the site. Standing wheat crop in about two acres of land was destroyed in the crash as the plane caught fire.

Tiwari said the residents of a farm house, barely 50 metres from the crash site, had a miraculous escape and so had the residents of Tolewal village, which is about half a km from the place where the plane fell. Air Force personnel from Barnala reached the crash site shortly after the crash and took away the pilot.
