I&B wants masala out of remixes, 13 songs on hitlist

Asha Parekh, actress and former Censor Board chief, wouldn’t have approved of it. The vision of a girl with loads of attitude in blue jeans, tattoo on her breast and with just the hint of blue thong, gyrating to Kaanta Laga… Hai Laga — the same song which once featured Parekh in a ghagra-choli.

Even the censors at the Information and Broadcasting Ministry have a problem with it. They have served a show-cause notice to the makers of the video. The Ministry has found 13 songs objectionable and three channels have been served notices.

Most of them are remixes of old Hindi film hits and the new Bhangra pop variety — Chura Liya, Wada Raha, Kaliyon Ka Chaman, Tumse Milke …

Next on the Ministry’s chopping block are the promos of adult films shown on satellite channels before these are censored by the CBFC.

Officials say they have received assurances from some of the channels who have offered to get the videos vetted by the CBFC before putting them on air. ‘‘The show-cause notices usually serve as a deterrent, but channels get back after changing some of the scenes,’’ officials said.

Another area that I&B Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has expressed concern about is the spurious commercials on private satellite channels. ‘‘I am not for censorship as there is a well laid-out programme and advertising code laid by the law to guide the channels,’’ Prasad had said, adding he expected the channels to follow the code.

Today, while inaugurating the National Conference of Chairpersons of State Women Commissions, Prasad said tougher action is needed. The Ministry has also issued 64 show-cause notices and passed 34 final orders on objectionble advertisements on television channels — these include liquor and lingerie commercials.

The Indian Broadcasting Federation is bringing out a code for music videos shortly and will be meeting next week to work out the details, officials said.
