Gurdial Ram, the controversial PSO to then IGP, Border Range, Rajan Gupta, has been grilled by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Rs 100-crore kidney transplant scam in Amritsar and has claimed he was ‘‘unaware’’ of the activities of middlemen with whom he was in regular contact.
Ram has been questioned over two days by SIT officers and has narrated his version of the controversial links with middlemen and some advocates.
Ram, whose cellphone records showed numerous conversations with the advocates, told SIT that he had come in contact with one of them by accident. ‘‘He says he is pursuing a divorce case with his first wife and knew the advocate in this connection,’’ said SIT sources.
Ram and his then boss, Gupta, have been under scrutiny ever since it came to light that a section of the top police brass not only had links with arrested kidney surgeon Dr P.K. Sareen but were part of the efforts to hush-up the case.
