The controversy generated by the accusations that three officers from the UN mission in Congo had raped a woman while holidaying in Pretoria has led to serious differences between the Army and the Defence Ministry. While the Army, having proved that the officers were not charged for the crime, has won the first round, the ministry is adamant on getting to the bottom of the affair. The Army has given its men a clean chit but the ministry is irked with the simple fact that its officers did in any case mix with dubious company. Defence Minister A K Antony is particularly keen to set an example. Meanwhile, the Army’s bad luck with Poland seems to continue as the event unfolded while the Army Chief was on a visit to the country. During the last visit to Poland by the then Army Chief V P Malik, the Kargil conflict had broken out.
