The Haryana Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution, urging the Prime Minister and the Centre to implement the June 4 decision of the Supreme Court on the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.

However, the Congress, the main Opposition party in the state, boycotted the discussion on the resolution when the Speaker refused to allow officiating CLP leader Capt Ajay Singh Yadav to participate in it.

Moving the resolution during the specially convened session of the Assembly, Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala appealed to all parties to rise above ‘‘petty politics’’ to pass the resolution unanimously.

The Supreme Court had, while accepting Haryana’s execution application and dismissing the suit of the Punjab government on June 4, directed the Centre to mobilise a central agency to take control of the canal works from Punjab within a month. An empowered committee, too, has to be set up to coordinate and facilitate the early implementation of the decree, according to the SC order.

Chautala said the Punjab government had been trying to create hurdles in the early completion of the canal’s construction. He urged the Centre to construct the canal as early as possible and the Punjab government, as ‘‘the elder brother of Haryana’’, to gracefully accept the SC verdict.
