KAPURTHALA, Aug 20: Police have arrested Akali Dal (Democratic) general secretary Tarlok Singh Lallian on the charge of swindling Rs 79,000 from one Joginder Singh of Kalasinghia village in the name of police.
Senior Superintendent of Police Iqbal Singh today told media persons that Britain-based Joginder Singh came to India in May last when he learnt of disappearance of his brother Sarwan Singh and sought police assistance to trace him. He said Tarlok Singh allegedly approached Joginder Singh and demanded Rs 1 lakh on behalf of police for registration of a case kidnapping and search of his brother. Joginder Singh reportedly paid him Rs 79,000 in two installments, he added.
But Tarlok Singh failed to get the case registered and started evading Joginder Singh, rousing the latter’s suspicion, who then met DSP Parambir Singh Parmar. A criminal case of fraud against Tarlok Singh was registered after investigation and Rs 79,000 recovered from him.
The SSP said this was the third case of fraud detected by the police. He said police had now launched a special drive against such impostors who cheated people in the name of police.
Meanwhile, the police have also registered a case of disappearance of Sarwan Singh, who is missing from his house since March 30 last and started investigation.
