
Cong to honour consensus sarpanch
The Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress will give a cash award of Rs 5,100 to the village gram panchayats which will elect a sarpanch on consensus. In a release issued here today, CTYC president Chandermukhi Sharma said that CTYC will honour the sarpanch at a function organised by the party immediately after the panchayat elections. He said that this step will strengthen the democratic set up at grossroot level and fulfil the dream of the former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi.
OBC branch inaugurated
A branch of Oriental Bank of Commerce was inaugurated today by P.K. Sharma, General Manager (Punjab Zone) of OBC, in the market of Sector 37-D. Those present at the occasion included R.S. Bindra, Deputy General Manager, Chandigarh Region and T.K. Dutta, secretary, All India OBC Employees Union.
Andaaz ’99 tomorrow
Chandigarh Students Club will organise a programme Andaaz `99 on January 1 at Bal Bhawan Auditorium, Sector 23 at 6.30 p.m. According to Mintoo Mahajan, organising secretary, dance and singing competitions will be held along with a fashion show.

A nagar kirtan procession on the occasion of Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Gobind Singh will be taken out on January 2 from the Sector 34 gurdwara.
New Year’s eve programme on AIR
A special programme on New Year’s eve will be aired on the All India Radio from 10.30 p.m. to midnight. The programme `Mubarak Naya Saal’ will comprise hit pop and folk songs of the year and will be compered by Punjabi and Haryanvi artists, according to Sanjiv Dosajh, programme executive.
UGC-sponsored programme ends
The 28-day 41st General Orientation Programme sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and conducted by the Academic Staff College, Panjab University, concluded here yesterday. The programme was attended by 31 college and university lecturers from different institutes in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Chandigarh, a press release issued here today stated.
Winter school ends
Western Command played host to 48 young participants of the Durga Das Winter School here today. The jawans gave the children a close up look at their fighting equipment. The highlight of the day’s programme was a ride on a T-55 tank. The programme at Chandimandir marked the conclusion of the week-long programme which included gliding, trekking and camping.
