
Two-year B.Ed course proposed
Extending the duration of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course from one to two years and improving the overall standards of teacher education were the major topics discussed on the first day of the seminar-cum-workshop on quality education for teachers that began at the ICSSR Complex in the Panjab University today. The seminar, being jointly organised by the Institute for Development and Communication and the Department of Education, PU, will focus on framing of a policy for education of secondary and senior secondary-level teachers and planning strategies for implementation of National Council for Teachers’ Education curriculum framework, 1998.
Shaloka contest at Sanskrit function
Sanskrit Department of Punjab University organised the inter-university declamation, Shaloka recitation and quiz contests to mark the annual function of the department at Panjab University. Jay Prakash Sharma, ex-chairman of Hindi Department was the chief guest and Virender Kumar of the Sanskrit Department was the coordinator of the function. S.L.B.S. Sanskrit University of Delhi won the shield in Sanskrit declamation contest, Jairam Vidyapith (Kurukshetra University) won the shield in shaloka recitation competition and Uchana Vidyapith (Haryana) won the shield in Sanskrit quiz.
Ambala college lifts poetry trophyKhalsa college staff hold dharna
A protest dharna was staged by the non-teaching employees of the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26 outside the principal’s office. The protestors were demanding immediate action against the culprits who had allegedly beaten two chowkidars, Krishan Chand and Dhanna Singh, of the college. The chowkidars were on a night duty on February 17 at the college campus when the incident occurred.
Railway convention panel meeting
The Railway Convention Committee held discussions on several issues with railway officials, here today. Railway sources said that steps to improve general security environment for railway passengers and checking corruption in public dealing figured during the talks. The three-member parliamentary committee was led by Bijoy Krishna Handiqua. The Additional General Manager, Northern Railways, S.A.A. Zaidi, SDGM, I.P. Anand, Divisional Railway Manager Vijay Kumar, senior officials of the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police, were also present.
PU staff flay govt’s delaying tactics
The Punjab University Association of Non-Teaching Staff deplored the "delaying tactics" of the Panjab University authorities in respect of implementation of the association’s accepted demands, including payment of fixed medical allowance, pension scheme, promotion policy, headship of the PU Health Centre by rotation, two promotional increments to the ASO’s, regular appointment of a chief security officer and construction of new Type-D houses.
Separate exams for compartment cases
Punjab University has decided to hold separate examination for the candidates who got compartment in B.A. I, II and III year in English taken as a compulsory subject. The examination will be held on March 31 at Chandigarh, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and Moga.
