Employee bodies hold joint rally
A joint rally was held today by various university employee associations under the banner of Panjab University Non-Teaching Employees Federation. According to a press statement by Dharam Paul Sharma, president and C Haridasan, secretary of the federation, the rally was held in protest the non-payment of balance amount of arrears on account of revision of pay scales. They stated that a rally would also be held when the university reopens after the Pooja holidays.
Orientation course concludes
The 40th general orientation programme conducted by the Academic Staff College, Panjab University for college and university teachers concluded, here today. According to a press statement issued by honorary director of the college, Prof H. S. Shergill, the programme was attended by 26 college and university lecturers. It was sponsored by the UGC.
NSUI rally tomorrow
The National Students Union of India (NSUI) will hold a protest rally on Wednesday to protest fee hike and to highlight the admission problems being faced by students. According to a press statement issued by the general secretary of the Punjab unit of the NSUI, Jodhvir Singh Virk, they would exert pressure on the Punjab Government to conduct elections in all the universities of the state.

Sarv Dharam Action Committee nRepresentatives of about 35 religious institutions today took part in the first meeting of the Sarv Dharam Action Committee held at the Sector 8 gurdwara. The members resolved that each institution will send names of three persons to constitute the general house of the committee, a press release said.

National group song competition
D C Model School of Sector 7 Panchkula bagged the first prize in a national group song competition organised by the local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad. According to a press release, the second prize in the senior and junior category was won by Chaman Lal DAV School, Sector 11, while the third prize went to the Army School at Chandimandir.

Senior citizens to be honoured
The Senior Citizens’ Federation, North Zone, at the first meeting of its governing council here, has resolved to celebrate the Elders’ Year from October 1. In a press release, federation general secretary Dr S K Sharma said senior citizens will be honoured as part of the celebrations. The governing council also approved a charter of demands seeking concessions in rail travel, free medical facilities and land on nominal rates for construction of day-care centres among other things. It was also decided to seek affiliation with the Indian Federation of Aging.
