CALCUTTA: `Little Master’ Sunil Gavaskar will be the chief director of the cricket academy to be set up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to Jagmohan Dalmiya.

In a statement yesterday, the BCCI secretary, Dalmiya said “Gavaskar had agreed to take over the responsibilities on an honorary basis.” The venue of the proposed academy was yet to be decided.

Reiffel to play

NOTTINGHAM: Medium paceman Paul Reiffel, a reinforcement for Australia’s cricket side, will be in the line-up tomorrow for Australia’s first-class fixture against Nottinghamshire just 24 hours after arriving in England.Injuries and a lack of knowledge of English conditions have been blamed for Australia’s nine-wicket thrashing in the first Ashes Test.

Reiffel is expected to strengthen the attack while proving back up for the injured fast bowlers Jason Gillespie and Andrew Bichel.

Sporting lose CALCUTTA: Mohammedan Sporting, once a big name on the Indian soccer scene, continued with their slump, going down to IFA XI in the losers’ final of the McDowell cup at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Tuesday. With this solitary goal defeat, Sporting finished at the bottom in the four-team tournament.

The goal came in the 73rd minute of the game with substitute Dipak Das converting a pass from Prasanta Bannerjee.

Tomorrow, FC Kochin take on East Bengal, surely the biggest game of the tournament.
