HOVE: Omkar Kulkarni, a 10-year-old student of Shrirang Vidyalaya, Thane, won the second prize in the British Under-10 Chess Championship which concluded at Hove recently. Omkar (5.5) finished half a point behind champion Stephen Gordon (6) of England after drawing the last round with him on Friday night.Omkar started the championship disastrously losing the very first round to Mathew Horborne of Wales. However, he won the next five games in a row and had he won the seventh and final round, Omkar would have been crowned the champion of British under-10 children.

Kukreja advances

MUMBAI: Abhijit Kukreja and Bikram Oberoi advanced into the quarter-finals of the under-16 boys event while Siddarth Sachdev made the last eight of the under-14 boys group in the Malaysian Junior Squash Championship at Kuala Lumpur.

Kukreja ousted Argentina’s Juan Fernandez 9-7, 9-4, 6-9, 9-5 while Oberoi shocked Hong Kong’s third-seeded Kan Chun Him with surprising ease 9-3, 9-1, 9-0 in the pre-quarter-finals, according to a release today from the Squash Rackets Association of Maharashtra (SRAM).

Tiger fan Holyfield

MAMARONECK: World heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield found himself in a somewhat different arena yesterday, turning out with a host of others to cheer Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship.

Holyfield was introduced to Woods before the 21-year-old Masters champion started his round, then watched Woods tee off in a group with South African US Open champ Ernie Els and British Open champion Justin Leonard.

Woods had attended the infamous bite of the century in Las Vegas, in which challenger Mike Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield’s ears.

Thukral too good

CHENNAI: Promising Rishab Thukral of Delhi raised his performance by several notches to oust Popular Ranjan by four frames to three to move into the next round in the MCC-150 All-India MCC Open snooker tournament here today. In other encounters, Varun Tanejabeat wild card Yatheetharaj (TN) 4-3, while former National champion Shyam Jagtiani of Bengal lost to Antim Singhi (TN) 2-4.
