India and China have decided to coordinate on issues of common interest, including agriculture, Trips & Public Health and investment at the on-going World Trade Organisation negotiations.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, the Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley said that China was keen that both the countries worked together on the identified issues.

Jaitley said that in his meeting with Chinese commerce minister Lu Fuyuan, it was decided that the two sides would exchange views frequently and make joint efforts to safeguard the interests of developing countries.

In agriculture, he said it was all right for the US to say that there should be ambitious goals, but it should realise that the direction of ambition may not be the same for all countries. He said moving in the same direction with developed countries would be possible for countries like India only if there was a special window for addressing specific concerns. Jaitley called for a special window with reasonable cushioning in forms of tariffs, special products and special safeguard mechanism.

On Trips & Public Health, China expressed its solidarity with India. China said it was all for protecting the interests of countries with insufficient manufacturing capacity of pharmaceutical products.

China has agreed to import 17 varieties of fruits and vegetables from India subject to SPS (sanitary & phyto-sanitary) clearance.
