Pillay gets offer from Dutch club

MUMBAI: Former Indian hockey team captain Dhanraj Pillay has been offered a six-month contract to play for the Dutch team Klein Zwitserland Club.

According to an official, who accompanied the Maharashtra team on its recent Europe tour, the state captain was offered contract for the second half of the Dutch league (till February 2000) by none other than the Netherlands hockey legend and the current chairman of the Klein Club, Ties Kruize.

Kruize offered Pillay the contract after watching the Indian ace during the Hague Hockeydays $10,000 prize money event where Pillay scored four goals and helped Maharashtra finish fifth, the official added.

The Klein Zwitseland Club won the Hague event but Pillay had impressed Kruize when he slammed in three goals against Bloemendaal, with four players from the World Cup winning Dutch National squad Jaap Berk Buma, Teun de Nooijer, Remco van Wijk and Erik Jazet.

MUMBAI: India have retained their 113ranking in the latest Fifa list but are placed at number 18 in Asia. The ranking will remain same even if it wins the South Asian Federation title as none of the teams above them in Asian ranking are taking part in the event.

Airlines in final

CHENNAI: Indian Airlines defeated holders Bank Sports Control Board 2-1 in the men’s semi-final team event in the second Inter-Institutional National Carrom Championship. IA will clash with Indian Audit (IAAD) in the team championship final. IAAD shocked last-year’s runners-up LIC 2-1 in the other well-contested semi-final.
