BANGALORE: Indian national champion Gopichand has entered the pre-quarterfinals of the $2,50,000 Korean Open Badminton Championship. Gopi Chand defeated world No 15 Jeron van Dijk of The Netherlands in three hard fought games 15-11, 12-15, 15-7. In the second, Gopi Chand beat Malaysian Yeo Kay Bin 15-8, 15-11. He will play the winner of the match between world No 9 Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark and Irwansyah of Indonesia on Thursday.

Zoravar shines

CHENNAI: Top shooter Zoravar Singh of Punjab led the pack with 70 points at the half-way stage of the shotgun trap event for men in the 42nd National Shooting Championship here on Wednesday. Zoravar scored 70 out of a possible 75, while Gaurav Sondhi (UP) was in the second position with four points behind the leader. Anwar Sultan (UP) and Anirudh Singh (Bihar) shared the third place with 65 points each.

DURGAPUR: Three Bengal boxers moved into the semifinals and Delhi’s Manish Negi and Madan Singh Mehra entered into the last eight in their respective categories in the 14th Sub-Junior (u-17) National Boxing Championship at the Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.

Cyclist dead

MUMBAI: Piloo Malcolm, city’s leading cyclist and skater of late 30s died here today due to old age. She was 83 and widow of 1948 cycling Olympian Malcolm. She leaves behind a son and daughter Bapu and Shirin who were both in their time National cycling champions.
