
Rajasthan retain trophy
PONDICHERRY: Maharashtra lost to Tamil Nadu in a close semi-final match 56-54 in the Junior National Basketball Championships.
In the other girls’ semifinals, Kerala scored a 58-47 win over Karnataka 58-47. Rajasthan retained the Junior National basketball championship title, defeating Andhra Pradesh 83-54 in the boys finals. Punjab claimed third spot, beating Madhya Pradesh 76-44. Earlier in the morning, Rajasthan registered a convincing 89-52 win over Madhya Pradesh, while Andhra Pradesh got past Punjab 66-61.
Indian juniors go down to Korea
CHENNAI: Indian Juniors went down fighting to South Korea in their second outing in the round-robin league Asian Qualification Volleyball tournament for World Championship at Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand today.
According to a fax message received by the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) here, the Koreans edged out India in three closely fought sets 25-19,25-22,25-23 , the nail biting contest lasting 80 minutes.
TheIndian juniors bothered the short statured korean with their persistant attack and good blocking. While Abhijit Bhattacharjee and Tom Joseph excelled in attack Yavar Ali stood up well to block the Koreans sharp shooting.
The Indians, who had defeated Japan by three sets to one yesterday in their first outing, will take on Australia tomorrow.
