
Mumbai to host
MUMBAI: The Asia Cup men’s tennis championship will be held in New Delhi from November 22 onwards, according to the revised schedule from All India Tennis Association (AITA).
Mumbai will host two men’s ITF Satellites, the first one starting from October 18 and the second from October 25.
Oct 18: ITF Satellite at Mumbai. Oct 25: ITF Satellite at Mumbai. Nov 1: ITF Satellite at Hyderabad. Nov 8: ITF Masters at Bhubaneshwar, Nov 22: Asia Cup at Delhi. Nov 29: Challenger at Lucknow. Dec 6: Challenger at Bangalore. Dec 13: Women’s $10,000 prize money ITF Futures (venue undecided). Dec 20: Women’s $10,000 ITF Futures (venue undecided). Dec 27: Women’s $25,000 ITF Futures at New Delhi.
Captain on July 28
MUMBAI: The captain of the Indian cricket team for the triangular One-day series between India, Australia and Sri Lanka to be held in Sri Lanka from August 22-31, will be chosen on July 28 at Nagpur.
TheBCCI working committee meeting in all probability will be decided by Thursday evening.
Joshna seeded No 2
MUMBAI: Chennai’s Joshna Chinnappa has been seeded second in the under-15 girls’ section of the Hong Kong Junior Open.
Joshna is seeded behind Sahar Jasmina of Malaysia in the group which has attracted players from Japan and hosts Hong Kong too, according to information available here.
In the girls’ under-11, Mumbai’s Alisha Mashruwalla is the top seed.
Three Indian boys, all from Mumbai, have entered to play in the boys’ under-15 — Nishad Lalwani is seeded second, Ishaan Balwani and Harshjit Sethi.
Team leaves
CALCUTTA: The 20-member Indian football team, led by Bengal striker Dipendu Biswas, left for Bangkok by this morning for their pre-Olympic Asia Group-9 match against Thailand.
The team underwent a fortnight-long coaching camp at the SAI Sports Complex here.
Maldives to host
CHENNAI: India will participate in the third Saarc Carrom Championships to be heldin Maldives from August 2-4.
Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan besides Maldives would compete in the championship, which carries a prize money of $500 each to the respective winners.
Jovi dead
PANAJI: Jovenian D’Souza, popularly known as Jovi, passed away late Wednesday night at his residence in Calangute following a brief illness. He was 80 and is survived by his wife and three children.
Jovi played in Mumbai for Tatas, whom he served for nearly 40 years.
Basketball tourney
PANAJI: Goa will host an under-16 All India Invitation Basketball Championship from October 31-November 8 at Vasco da Gama.
Sixteen teams — eight boys and as many girls — will take part in the championship. The outstation teams are: Delhi, Punjab, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Pondicherry.
