
Betting racket nails four
CALCUTTA: The city police tonight arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in cricket betting during the Coca-Cola Cup final between India and Australia at Sharjah.
Police sources said, the persons were arrested from Jorashanko in central Calcutta and the Lake police station area in the southern part of the city. Some cash, television and telephone sets were seized from them.
The police had stepped up efforts to nab bookies following the arrest of four persons for their alleged involvement in cricket gambling during the Australia-New Zealand match at Sharjah on Tuesday.
Double for Isha
NAGPUR: Isha Lakhani braved the soaring Nagpur heat and a tough foe successfully to emerge the winner of a double crown at the All India Adidas Junior Tennis Championship for the West Zone (second leg) which concluded at the CP Club Courts today afternoon.
Mumbai’s Lakhani, who had won the under-16 title yesterday, outclassed her citymate top seed Megha Wakharia instraight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the girls under-14 event today morning. She had earlier defeated Nikita Bharadwaj (Gujarat) 6-2 6-4 in the under-16 final Vikrant Sane and Preetam Parikh won the titles in boys under-14 and 16, respectively. Second seed Sane (Pune) defeated top seed Rohan Gajjar 6-4, 6-3, while Parikh (Mum) recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alok Bhide (Pune).
Schools Cricket
CHANDIGARH: The first National Schools Cricket Championship for Girls (Under-19) will be held in Patiala from May 22 to 27.
The championship, organised by the Directorate of Public Instruction (Schools) under the aegis of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) will be a regular feature, SGFI secretary general B D Gandhi said here today.
