SIVAKASI:
SS Ganguly (GNCA) won the Junior National chess championship, defeating S Kidambi (TN) after the two players were level at the end of the final round and subsequent tie-breaker.

As the total points and progressive scores for Ganguly and Kidambi were the same, a tie-breaker was resorted to by playing two 15-minute matches where both scored 1-1. Another two lightning games were given which Ganguly won with a score of 1.5-0.5.

In the final round, Ganguly, needing a win to clash for the title with Kidambi, beat P Mahesh Chandran in 28 moves. Kidambi defeated V Kamble of Maharashtra.

Andhra Pradesh children set the pace

At the end of eight rounds in the 13th National children chess championship, players from Andhra Pradesh lead in all the categories but one.

Karim, Charanjeet shine in Bengal win
JAMSHEDPUR:
A defiant unbeaten 69 by middle order batsman Rajiv Kumar went in vain as Bengal trounced Bihar by 91 runs in another East Zone one-day match today. Chasing 251, Bihar, 91 for six at obne stage, could manage 159 for eight after 50 overs. Earlier, the Bengal innings was floundering at 87 for four before Saba Karim (76) and Charanjeet Singh (53) put on 97 for the fifth wicket. Brief scores: Bengal 250-7 in 50 overs (Saba Karim 76, Charanjeet Singh 56) bt Bihar 159-8 in 50 overs (Rajiv Kumar 69).

Satpathy’s all-round show saves Orissa
ANGUL (ORISSA):
A fine bowling performance by medium pacer Robin Morris and all-rounder Sanjay Satpathy’s crucialeffort enabled Orissa beat Assam by two wickets in their East Zone Ranji Trophy one-day tie today. Satpathy, who scored 31 off 18 balls, added 50 for the unbroken ninth wicket with Ajay Barik (15). He was adjudged man of the match.

Brief scores: Assam 202 in 50 overs (Subhrajit Saikia 33, Vinayak Samant 32, Tariq-ur Rahman 42; Robin Morris 5-30) lose to Orissa 203-8 in 47.2 overs (P Jayachandra 56, RR Parida 36, S Singh 36, Sanjay Satpathy not out 31; Rajesh Bora 3-30).

Kerala girls in National volleyball finalTIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Holders Tamil Nadu boys and Kerala girls will meet Ponicherry and Tamil Nadu respectively in the final of the National junior volleyball championship.

In the semi-finals on Saturday night, Pondicherry beat formidable Andhra Pradesh 25-18 18-25 19-25 25-18 19-17, while Tamil Nadu beat Punjab 25-22 25-16 21-25 25-10.

Kerala girls defeated AP 25-10 23-25 25-19 25-10, while Tamil Nadu accounted for West Bengal 25-16 25-17 25-21.

Pargat slams IHF for`mismanagement’NEW DELHI: Former captain Pargat Singh has slammed the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) for “mismanagement and continuous indifference towards improving the game in the country.”

Talking to a television channel, he said lack of proper calendar was hampering the growth of hockey in the country. The former captain also held the Federation responsible for failing to market the game properly.
