HARARE, Aug 12: New Zealand beat India by “golden goal” to enter the final of the World Cup women’s hockey qualifying tournament, here, today.New Zealand will now take on South Africa, who defeated Scotland 2-1 in the other semi-final.

The India-New Zealand match went into extra time, with the score at 1-1. The Kiwis scored the first goal when Kate Trolove swept the ball into the net, but Sandeep Kaur put India level two minutes into the second half.

New Zealand scrambled the winning golden goal four minutes from the end of extra time when it seemed a penalty shootout was likely. India had already qualified for next year’s World Cup at Utrecht, Netherlands along with South Africa, New Zealand and Scotland.

Scotland and India will now play off for third and fourth places on the last day of the qualifiers on Tuesday. The qualifying six for World Cup include England and China.

The 12 competing qualifiers at Harare’s Magamba Stadium are playing for final placings, which affect world rankings.
