NEW DELHI, April 26: The annual rate of inflation fell to its lowest level in 1998 at 4.78 per cent for the week ended April 11, despite an increase in prices of primary food articles.

Inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), shed 0.13 percentage points in the week under reference to 4.78 per cent (provisional) from 4.91 per cent (P) in the previous week and 6.58 per cent during the corresponding week last year.

Inflation fell to a 16-week low in the current week despite a 0.5 per cent rise in index for food articles. This is the second consecutive week when prices of food articles, which eased substantially during February-March, are increasing.

The index for ‘all commodities’ (1981-82=100) rose during the week to 337.8 (P) from 337.7 (P) for the previous week.
