Injured Tibetans afraid to go to hospitals: Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama has appealed to the world community for their 'continued support' to put an immediate end to the Chinese crackdown in Tibet.

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has appealed to the world community for their ‘continued support’ to put an immediate end to the Chinese crackdown in Tibet.

He insisted that the demonstrations and protests are a manifestation of “deep-rooted resentment” not only of the Tibetan people in the “so-called Tibetan Autonomous Region,” but also in the traditional Tibetan areas now incorporated into Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, where there exists substantial communities of Tibetans.

“The Chinese authorities have deployed large contingents of troops in these traditional Tibetan regions and have not only started to crack down heavily on the Tibetans allegedly involved in the unrest, but also sealed off areas where protests have taken place,” the Dalai Lama said in a statement issued the night before in Dharamsala.

He appealed to world leaders, Parliamentarians, NGOs and members of the public for “continued support in calling for an immediate end to the current crackdown, the release of all those who have been arrested and detained, and the provision of proper medical treatment to the injured.”

Quoting reports, the Dalai Lama said many injured Tibetans were afraid to go to the Chinese-run hospitals and clinics for treatment.

“I would also request you to encourage the sending of an independent international body, to investigate the unrest and its underlying causes, as well as allowing the media and international medical teams to visit the affected areas,” he said, adding their presence will instill a sense of reassurance in Tibetans and also exercise a restraining influence on Chinese authorities.
