First Burail, then Tihar, and now Ambala Central Jail has recorded a runaway. A twin-murder accused, Vijay Pal, slipped away from PGI on Wednesday where he had been admitted 12 days ago. Four policemen from the Police Lines, Panchkula, who were on guard, are also ‘missing’.
‘‘Pal had been sent to PGI on February 7 from Ambala Jail along with guards of the Ambala Police. On February 9, his security was handed over to Panchkula police,’’ Mohammad Akil, SP (Ambala) says.
The escape was discovered around midnight on Wednesday when Davinder, the nurse on duty, found the policemen and Pal missing, his handcuffs were on the bed. SP (Panchkula) Ranbir Sharma says: ‘‘The four policemen may have gone in search of the accused. Pal escaped on the pretext of going to the bathroom and the constable opened his handcuffs.’’
Says Davinder: ‘‘The patient was not on his bed since 7.30 pm. Around midnight when I did not see the policemen, I alerted senior officials.’’
The UT Police have since informed their Panchkula counterparts.
