When the BJP objected to Doordarshan’s telecasting the full speeches of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at the AICC session on the grounds that it violated the Election Commission’s code of conduct in Gujarat and Himachal, DD had an interesting explanation. The AICC session—to all purpose and intent a full-fledged launch for Rahul —was interpreted by DD as a “newsworthy event that discussed international issues like the nuclear deal”. The public broadcaster is keeping its fingers crossed, hoping the EC is not watching it as closely as the Opposition is.
