Iran’s answer on Thursday to an EU demand that it freeze sensitive nuclear work such as uranium enrichment, was described as not too disappointing, but not completely definitive by an EU diplomat familiar with the talks.

Tehran, which insists its atomic ambitions are entirely peaceful, faces being reported to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions if it refuses to suspend enrichment, which can be used to make bomb-grade material. The diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iran’s answer had been delivered Thursday night in Tehran to the ambassadors of Britain, Germany and France.

The EU trio have offered to help Iran avoid referral to the UN Security Council if it freezes enrichment activities. —Reuters
