National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra today reiterated the Indian position on Iraq saying that Baghdad should be given maximum chance to avoid a conflict. He advised Saddam Hussien to ‘‘comply fully’’ with the UN resolution 1441. Talking at a book release function here, Mishra insisted that ‘‘If Iraq does not comply with the world body’s resolution, it should be the UN which should enforce compliance’’.
Making the point that India was against a unilateral intervention by the US, he said: ‘‘It is a difficult situation for the international community as far as the Iraq is concerned’’.
Addressing a book release, India’s National Security Annual Review-2002 here today, the top security adviser said that if the war breaks out, the geo-political scenario in the region would undergo a change and ‘‘in that case, India would have to deal according to its own interests’’.
‘‘As far as we are concerned, we want that maximum chance should be given to avoid a war,’’ he said at the function attended by among others US Ambassador to India Robert Blackwill.
