January 9: The engineering department of Air-India was today awarded the ISO 9002 certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards at a simple function held at its Old Airport premises. The functioning of the department, which has emerged as a separate profit-centre of the airline undertaking assignments for even competing airlines, will fully confirm to international standards, Michael Mascarenhas, managing director, AI said. It is the first airline in India to be awarded the ISO certification. The engineering departments of only a handful of other airlines, like the British Airways, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines have obtained this certification.

Mascarenhas informed that other departments of the airline, like engine overhaul and ground services, are attempting to obtain ISO 9000 series certification by the end of the century.

Said P S Das, director general, Bureau of Indian Standards, which awarded certification to Air-India the ISO (International Standards Organisation) certification is a hallmark of total quality management.
