The Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Krishnaghati area of Poonch district this morning, in which one jawan was killed while another was seriously wounded. According to an Army spokesperson, a joint patrol of the Border Security Force and the Army was on a routine patrol along two “forward defended positions” near the LoC when it came under fire from a group of militants attempting to cross over. While the small patrolling party of five personnel immediately suffered two casualties, it managed to rebuff the attack and the militants retreated back across the LoC after heavy exchange of fire. The number of militants who had attempted to cross into India could not be ascertained. The incident took place at 9 am.“The group seems to have crossed over at night and was hiding in the thicket waiting for darkness to fall to continue their journey. They opened fire when our party approached their position during a routine patrol,” an Army spokesperson said. He added that the incident took place well inside Indian territory and there was no exchange of fire with Pakistani troops. “The exchange of fire took place well inside our territory. There has been no violation of the cease fire with Pakistan,” the officer confirmed, adding that reports of cross border firing were “baseless”.
