JAIPUR, June 22: The move to take back Gunner Pawan Singh, facing trial for murder in the Ajmer Central Jail, to his Army unit to fight intruders in Kargil, has run aground.
Sources say that Major H Mehta, deputy commanding officer of the Second Lancers (Pawan’s unit), who was made personally responsible for the re-transfer of Pawan’s custody to the judiciary after three months, had not volunteered himself to give such an undertaking.
Naib Subedar Mahipal Singh, who had been camping at Ajmer — after delivering the Major’s request — contacted his family members at nearby Jethana village last evening and asked them to seek Pawan’s release on bail. The court had rejected Pawan’s application for bail earlier.
District sainik welfare officer Lt. Col J S Paul, who had tried hard to facilitate the transfer of Pawan’s custody, appeared to have given up today. When contacted by The Indian Express, he remarked that he he did not have anything to say. Jai Singh Rathore, counsel for Pawan, said he hadfiled fresh bail application last week and the court was yet to dispose of it.
