Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa today held detailed discussions with officials following the release of Cauvery water from Kabini reservoir.

However, no decision has been taken on the all-important question of opening Mettur dam to enable the delta farmers to begin the current kuruvai operations.

During the discussion that centred on the inflow to Mettur dam from Kabini, the officials informed that a quantum of 10,000 cusecs was discharged from Kabini on June 18. Later it was stepped up to 21,000 cusecs on the next day and 23,000 cusecs on June 20.

The discharge from Kabini has been reduced to 13,000 cusecs today as the inflow into that reservoir had come down to 16,000 cusecs. The storage at Mettur had gone up from 12 TMC to 13 TMC. The inflow had also gone up from 9,000 cusecs to 25,199 cusecs by this evening.

If the current inflow was maintained, PWD sources said that the storage at Mettur was likely to rise by three TMC in the next two days (12,000 cusecs for 24 hours increases storage by 1 TMC). However, Mettur could be opened only if the reservoir had a minimum of 40 TMC and the water level reaches at least 70 feet.
