Playing it safe, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi has preferred to re-nominate most of the 45 of the 62 sitting MLAs in the coming elections.
The Congress announced 73 out of the 90 names, in which only one minister, belonging to the erstwhile V.C. Shukla camp, has been dropped. Jogi seems to have ‘‘rewarded’’ four Shukla loyalists of the total seven MLAs who did not leave the party when he quit to join the NCP.
Minister resigns

RAIPUR: Sitting minister, Vidhan Mishra, a V.C. Shukla loyalist who has been denied ticket to accommodate OBC candidate Shaya Verma, has announced his resignation. In Delhi now, Mishra is returning on Saturday to hand over his resignation to Governor Lt Gen (retd) K.M. Seth. Ruling out his resignation as part of move to join his mentor for an NCP ticket, Mishra said: ‘‘I am resigning on moral grounds.’’ (ENS) |
Shukla’s brother and party leader Shyama Charan Shukla has only managed to get two of his loyalists on the list, including his son Amitesh.
Jogi has also managed a ticket for the sitting Rajya Sabha MP from Akaltara constituency, Ramadhar Kashyap. In case Kashyap does win, he might opt out of Rajya Sabha, creating another option for Jogi in case he is not favoured for chief ministership.
Notwithstanding the controversy about his tribal status, Jogi is contesting from an ST reserved seat, his traditional constituency of Marwahi. Though it appears that the party high command has given a free hand to Jogi, the CM’s camp is said to be apprehensive of the support it would get from the high command if every seat is opened for discussion.
By repeating most of the sitting MLAs, Jogi has made sure that after the elections, a majority of MLAs would support him for chief ministership. It is learnt that Jogi was not keen on fielding too many newcomers as their ‘‘winnability’’ hasn’t been proved yet. Of the 73 names announced, 63 were suggested by Jogi, four are with Charandas Mahant and two each with Shyama Charan Shukla and Moti Lal Vora whose son Arun has also landed a ticket from Durg. The rest of the names could be announced on Monday.
