For many cricket aficionados the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa next month may be just another carnival. For Virender Sehwag, though, it is a chance to redeem himself.
“Personally, this Twenty20 World Cup is important for me to get back to the Indian side. I’ve been working hard on my batting and my fitness. I hope to do well in South Africa to get back to the squad,” he said.
Sehwag is one of the few lucky Indian players to have been exposed to Twenty20, both at the domestic level and internationally. He was captain of the Indian team in their first international Twenty20 match against South Africa last year.
“Let’s be clear with some things. This format is suited for players such as myself, who don’t like to block or defend but prefer to go after the ball,” said Sehwag.
The swashbuckling batsman stated that he is really excited about playing in the tournament, as it allows him to have more freedom with his batting. “This type of cricket is a nightmare when it comes to bowlers. However, the focus of Twenty20 is to attract a crowd and the people love to see boundaries, so that’s what I will do,” said Sehwag.
Sehwag also stated that the key to Twenty20 was not having a good batting side, but having players who could bowl and bat—all-rounders.
