Former External Affairs Minister and suspended Congress leader K Natwar Singh on Saturday joined the BSP along with two Samajwadi Party leaders Shahid Siddiqui and S P Singh Baghel.

They joined the party in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, who addressed a huge gathering of her party’s national convention of workers. Siddiqui and Baghel have been made national general secretaries.

Singh, who had to quit the Union government in the wake of the oil-for-food scam in Iraq, was a member of the Rajya Sabha till recently and his term has ended.

Siddiqui, who quit the Samajwadi Party before the trust vote in Lok Sabha last month, will contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh on a BSP ticket. Baghel defied the SP whip and voted against the government’s confidence motion in the Lok Sabha. The two were expelled from SP.
